Zakari: Opposition parties threaten to pull out of peace accord with Abdulsalami committee

- Opposition parties have threatened to pull out of the peace accord signed with National Peace Committee if Amina Zakari is not relieved of her new appointment at INEC

- The parties, speaking under the umbrella of CUPP, IPAC and others, demand that Zakari be removed for sake of fairness and transparency

- The presidency on Friday, January 4 strongly denied any family relationship between President Buhari and Zakari

Several opposition parties under the umbrella of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and other stakeholders have threatened to pull out of the Peace Accord initiated by the Gen Abdusalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee.

The parties and stakeholders said they wanted appointment of Amina Bala-Zakari as head of collation centres for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the oncoming general elections reversed.

Punch reports that the coalition included the threat in a statement by its first national spokesperson, Imo Ugochinyere, on Thursday, January 3.

Ugochinyere said: “The desperation of the President must be reined in now before it is too late. We categorically reject this appointment and will consider very drastic measures including pulling out of the peace accord which does not repose a commensurate responsibility of the President to allow INEC conduct credible, free and fair elections."

IPAC, the body officially recognised by INEC to speak on behalf of all political parties in the country, also called on INEC to immediately reverse the appointment of Zakari as the chairperson of the committee on National Collation Centre.

The President of IPAC, Peter Ameh, on Friday, January 4, urged INEC to remove Zakari for the sake of transparency and fairness.

Legit.ng had reported that INEC said that it had no plans to remove Amina Zakari as head of the collation centre committee for the forthcoming polls.

INEC also refuted reports that Zakari, virtue of her office, will take part in the collation of results after the elections.

Zakari was appointed the head of the committee on Thursday, January 3, when it inaugurated key committees for the polls, a move which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bitterly objected to.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng also reported that the presidency denied that President Muhammadu Buhari and Zakari, a commissioner with INEC share a family relationship as being speculated by the People’s Democratic Party.

Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said in a statement in Abuja on Friday that the imputation of blood relationship between the President and the electoral commissioner was `a simple lie’.
