We will not accept any foreign interference - Oshiomhole replies US, UK, EU over Onnoghen’s suspension

- Adams Oshiomhole has reacted to statements issued by the governments of US, UK and European Union observers on the suspension of the CJN, Walter Onnoghen

- Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the APC, said Nigeria is not a colony and it not accept any foreign interference

- The party national chairman, however, called on Nigerians to defend the country’s sovereignty

Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, has faulted the statements issued by the governments of the US, UK and the European Union observers on the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Channel TV reports that Oshiomhole on Monday, January 28, condemned the statements at the presidential villa after the APC Senate caucus and the party’s senatorial candidates met with President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, “Nigeria is not a colony. We will not accept any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Nigeria.” He argued that judges get dismissed in Europe and the United States without interference.

According to him, “They (judges) have been dismissed across the world when they are found guilty of corruption and the western world cannot, on the one hand when it suits them, describe Nigeria as fantastically corrupt and when a corrupt judicial officer is being charged, people want to interfere.”

He called on Nigerians to defend the country’s sovereignty saying “I think we all have to be careful. We must defend the sovereignty of our country. “We welcome collaboration, we welcome peer review; we can compare notes.

''We welcome people who are interested in sharing experiences with us wherever the need arises whether it is capacity building or making useful suggestions on how we can improve on our electoral process. Those are very valuable contributions that we appreciate.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the United Kingdom expressed serious concern over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement released on Saturday, January 26, the British High Commission said the uproar the matter has caused across Nigeria and the fact that it happened so close to the general elections were quite worrying.

The UK's statement read: "We have heard a wide range of credible and independent voices, including in the Nigerian legal profession and civil society, who have expressed concern over the constitutionality of the executive branch’s suspension of the chief officer of the judiciary.

"We respect Nigeria’s sovereign authority and its right to adjudicate on constitutional provisions but as friends of the Nigerian people, we are compelled to observe that the timing of this action, so close to national elections, gives cause for concern.''
