NAF covering up Borno IDPs tragedy caused by bomber jets - Falana alleges

- A famous human rights activists in Nigeria, Femi Falana (SAN) has cried out over the tragedy that took place in Rann town, Borno state in 2017

- Falana pointed out that a Nigerian Air Force jet accidentally bombed an IDP camp in the area, killing 52 persons, leaving 120 wounded

- The SAN is demanding for further probe into the tragedy, compensation for the victims; he is also alleging that there is bid to cover up the disaster

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a human rights activists, has called on National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), to compensate IDPs victims of the accidental bombing in Rann town, Borno by a Nigerian Air Force jet in 2017.

Alongside calling for more probe into the development that claimed the lives of 52 persons and left about 120 victims wounded, Falana also accused the Air Force of trying to cover up the tragedy, Vanguard reports.

The letter read: “Instead of reporting the tragic incident to the Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB, which is saddled with the responsibility of investigating aircraft accidents in Nigeria, the authorities of the Nigerian Air Force decided suo motu to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the bombing of the IDPs camp.

“Although the report of the inquiry was not made public, the Nigerian Air Force blamed the bombing of the camp on an accident.

“Apart from expressing its deepest regrets to all concerned, the NAF promised that all necessary measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence of the unfortunate incident.

‘’However, the tragic incident cannot be blamed on failure to mark the camp in an area that is fully controlled by the army.”

The SAN went on to say that being that the pilots were aware of the IDPs camp at Rann, their inability to mark off the area is inexcusable.

Falana said: “Regrettably, the cry of the council chairman, Mr. Malarima, for payment of compensation to the families of the deceased, as well as the injured ones has fallen on deaf ears.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that about 51 repentant Boko Haram insurgents on Saturday, October 13, 2018, narrowly escaped being killed by angry IDPs in Borno whose relations were said to have been victims of insurgency.

The repentant insurgents were first evacuated to the Bulumkutu Rehabilitation Centre, to undergo psychosocial de-radicalization. They were later moved to the Bakassi camp for onward evacuation to their communities at Gwoza.
