- The police in Abuja are yet to release Senator Dino Melaye, despite a court order that he should be released on bail

- The Kogi state lawmaker was arrested at his Abuja residence as a suspect in a homicide case but was granted bail on health grounds

- According to court filings, the senator satisfied the court’s demand on Monday, January 21; but he is still being held by the police

Despite a court order that Senator Dino Melays should be released on bail once he meets his bail conditions, the police in Abuja are yet to release the lawmaker.

Melaye said he has been ill since he was arrested on January 4 and was granted bail with stringent conditions by the Maitama division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on Friday, January 18, in order to allow him access to his doctors, Premium Times reports.

Legit.ng notes that the Kogi state lawmaker was arrested at his Abuja residence as a suspect in a homicide case. Melaye has, however, denied involvement in the murder which reportedly occurred in his state in 2018.

According to the senator, the police under then IGP Ibrahim Idris was on a witch-hunt to weaken him politically. Idris, however, denied the accusation.

Following an eight-day siege that began on December 28 at his Maitama residence, the senator eventually surrendered on January 4 and was subsequently arrested.

Despite claiming that his health has deteriorated, the police declined to release him. Rather, they moved him to a medical facility run by the State Security Service in Abuja.

The court granted the senator bail on the basis of his health, with conditions that included presenting three sureties who live and own properties in Abuja. The National Assembly's clerk was also required to sign Melaye's bail bond.

According to court filings, the senator satisfied the court’s demand on Monday, January 21.

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that an Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama on Thursday, January 17, ordered the police to show cause over its continued detention of Senator Dino Melaye.

Justice Yusuf Halilu gave the order after Melaye’s counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), informed the court that his client has been in police custody since January 4, against what the law stipulates.
