History of Kcee

These days, the name of Kcee can be encountered everywhere – he continuously keeps making us happy with the new hits. This singer performs in the African popular music style, and he offers a new unique twist on the music that we have heard a thousand times before. Kcee music is always an unforgettable experience for African pop lovers, and today, we will dive deeper into his biography. Who is Kcee? Where is Kcee from? And how old is Kcee? All these things, and many more, you will find out in his biography.

Kcee: childhood and beginnings

The full name of the singer is Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo, and for the stage, he decided to shorten it to Kcee. The young man was born in Ajegunle, Lagos, even though he originates from the small south-eastern town situated in Anambra State, called Uli. Kingsley Okonkwo, or Kcee, was born on April 18th, 1979. So, as of today he is 39 years old and will celebrate his 40th birthday in April.

The young Kcee was raised in Lagos State. He spent his childhood in the ghetto area, and his father, who was a well-known DJ, was responsible for his upbringing together with his mother. This is where Kcee received his primary school education – he went to the Central High School in Isolo.

When Kcee commented on his past and talked about how it was to live in such a region, he said that it was quite difficult for him. He confessed that there was a lot of hustle in Ajegunle, and people were struggling. This is why he had to fight for himself and his dreams, and forget about being lazy because all the hard work would later pay off, and laziness would bring nothing. He said that his parents gave him some training at school, but he always dreamed about more than that. He added that many people he knew had to hustle, so he also joined in, because it would help him secure his future. In the place he grew, it would be either hustling, or dying in the ghetto, and this is why Kcee had to work hard.

From the very start, Kcee wanted to become famous, but not in music. He enjoyed playing football, and his biggest dream was becoming a professional player. In his young years, he managed to play for two local football clubs – “Julius Berger” and “Puma”. However, everything changed when Kingsley joined the church choir. At first, he just joined it for fun, but later he discovered that he enjoys singing. Since he was a son of a professional DJ, Kcee already knew a lot of music genres and was familiar with various compositions.

When Kingsley made a decision to start his career in music, he gained support and approval from his mother. However, his father was against it at first – he wanted his son to study medicine or law at the university and become a successful doctor or lawyer. He believed that music would not bring him any income, because these days it is quite difficult for young people to become a popular musician. Still, Kcee decided to prove his father wrong, and eventually, he started bringing home the first money that he earned from his performances. This is when his father changed his mind and allowed his son to follow his dreams.

Kingsley received his Theatre Arts degree at the University of Nsukka. At first, he started his journey in music as a rapper and was recording songs in this style. But later, he thought it would be better for him to become a singer. His music career kicked off in 2002 when he became a participant of the show “Star Quest”. He won this popular competition and was paid a sum of N20,000 for his victory.

At the beginning of his long and fruitful music journey, Kcee decided not to go through it alone – he suggested his good friend, Presh, to pursue their career together. Kcee met Presh in church choir and the two friends thought that it would be smart to team up and work as a group. This is how “Kcee Presh” music duo was created. The duo has won the Star Quest TV show and remained together for many years, contributing to Nigeria’s Afropop industry with their creative and innovative songs.

Kcee and Presh signed a lucrative record deal with Nigeria’s biggest record label of the time – “Kennis Music”. Some time later, they decided to leave this label and move on to creating their own, which they called “KP Records”. Soon, they changed the name of the label, relaunching it under the title “Blingz Records”. Under this label, the two singing friends released one album, called “No Time”. The leading single from this album was called “Shokori bobo” in 2008.

Unfortunately, the union of Kcee and Presh did not last forever – after twelve years of being in the Nigerian music entertainment, they disbanded in 2011, when they had some inconsolable differences and decided it would be for the best to go their separate ways.

After they disbanded and started their own solo career, Kcee founded the label called “Five Star Music”. The career of Kcee mostly skyrocketed after the release of his popular song “Limpopo”. This single became really famous and loved among the Nigerians and it brought Kcee to the limelight of Nigerian Afropop music. As the singer himself stated, he has written his hit song in less than forty minutes, and he has never expected for it to become such a huge hit.

In 2013, Kcee released his debut album “Take Over”. For many of the songs featured on this album, he collaborated with great Nigerian artistes, including Wizkid, Timaya, D’Banj, Phyno, Davido, Don Jazzy, Flavour N’abania, and the others. It was very warmly received by both the critics and the public. His first full album gained him a lot of nominations for prestigious awards. Kcee ended up winning the Hip-Hop World Awards, KORA Awards, and Channel O Awards nominations.

After that, the career of Kcee started going up. He got a lot of nominations at such award ceremonies as The Headies, and won the Hip Hop World Revelation of the Year, with his song “Take Over”. He also managed to sign a lot of profitable endorsement contracts. For example, he signed a multi-millionaire deal with MTN. Another profitable deal of his was signed with the company “Magnum”. He was also appointed as Nigeria’s Peace Ambassador by the former first lady, Patience Jonathan.

Kcee's wife and children

Lately, it became the public knowledge that Kcee has a gorgeous wife. It was shocking to the fans because the singer was claiming that he is single for many years. However, last year he and his wife Ijeoma Oduah-Okonkwo, celebrated their eighth anniversary of their wedding. Kcee was always the person who led a rather mysterious lifestyle, and his wife has not been seen together with him in public.

When Kcee commented on his marriage, he said that he never claimed not being married, and the media just twisted his words. He confessed that he does not like talking about his marriage publicly because, for him, it is a very private matter. But in fact, he never confirmed or denied the fact of his marriage. He was asked about the certain wedding in Lekki that took place a few years ago, and he only said that this wedding was not his, but his brother’s.

Kcee and Ijeoma do not interact online and do not post any photos of each other. The closest thing that proved their relationship was Ijeoma posting a photo where she designed a scene for Kcee’s video shootings. Apparently, this woman is an event designer and works with a lot of wealthy clients that need her help in the event organization. She owns the business named pixieworldevents. It looks like sometimes she helps her husband with the venues for his music videos.

There were some rumors about Ijeoma not being happy with Kcee being a public person, as well as the cheating rumors. However, Kcee said that he's not a cheater. This type of information usually surfaces in the media about every couple who keep their life private. Kcee and Ijeoma are a perfect example of a couple who separate their public and personal life.

As the sources state, Kcee also has two children, a boy and a girl. Nonetheless, there is not much known about them, as he keeps them off social media and public events as well.
