Just in: Why we won’t remove Amina Zakari as head of polls collation centre - INEC

- INEC has responded to claims that Amina Zakari, the new head of polls collation centre, will be used to rig the elections

- The electoral body said that even as head of the committee, Zakari will still not be involved in the collation of results after the elections

- The electoral umpire therefore said that it has no plans to recall Zakari's new appointment as demanded by the PDP

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it has no plan to remove Amina Zakari as head of the collation centre committee for the forthcoming polls..

Moreover, INEC refuted reports that Zakari, virtue of her office, will take part in the collation of results after the elections, The Cable reports.

Zakari was appointed the head of the committee on Thursday, January 3, when it inaugurated key committees for the polls, a move which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bitterly objected to.

Responding to the development, PDP was quoted to have said: “There is no way Amina Zakari will not allocate votes to her blood relation, President Buhari.”

However, INEC's director of voter education and publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, pointed out that Zakari’s committee is “basically in charge of the physical structure” (the International Conference Centre which is the collation centre).

“The chairman of INEC by virtue of the electoral act is the returning officer of the country for the presidential election. It is he who decides the validity of votes and any issues in the election” Osaze-Uzzi said Zakari’s committee is primarily “in charge of welfare.”

“She was also very involved in negotiating with the ICC management in 2015 for the use of the facility so her duty is to ensure the facility is ready. She has no role whatsoever with the process of collation.”

“Removing her as the chairman of the committee to prepare the facility? That’s not an issue. It’s a needless controversy; not an issue at all.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) had given the INEC 48 hours to rescind its appointment of Amina Zakari, a niece of President Muhammadu Buhari, as head of the elections collation committee.

The non-governmental organisation said Zakari's appointment showed clear signs that the forthcoming presidential election had already been “technically manipulated”, and likened the move to "match-fixing'.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
