The Ohanaeze Ndigbo organisation has been commended by the Zikist-Buharists Movement, a group working for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, for denying reports that the pan-Igbo association had endorsed the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.
The acting zonal secretary of the movement, Godwin Onwusi, in a statement on Sunday, January 13, commended Ohanaeze for the clarification, Punch reports.

Legit.ng notes that there had been reports that Ohanaeze, the apex socio-political body of the Igbos, endorsed Abubakar at a meeting of Igbo political leaders at Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, on November 14.
At a media briefing recently, Chuks Ibegbu, the deputy national publicity secretary of Ohanaeze, however, explained that the association did not endorse Abubakar at the event.
Speaking on behalf of the Zikist-Buharists Movement, Onwusi stated: “The Zikist-Buharists Movement is commending Ohanaeze Ndigbo for refuting the news that the organisation endorsed Atiku Abubakar, as erroneously canvassed.
“We are happy with Ohanaeze’s clarification because it is absolutely necessary following misconceptions on the event of November 14, 2018, where some spin doctors spread the news that Igbo leadership had endorsed the candidacy of Atiku for the 2019 presidential election."
According to the movement, it was not “politically correct” for Ndigbo to endorse Abubakar.
It added that Ohanaeze is advancing the collective interests of Ndigbo, particularly the quest for an Igbo to emerge as president in 2023, by denying the reported endorsement of Abubakar.
Onwusi stated: “ZBM’s commendation of the Ohanaeze leadership is predicated on the truism that it is not politically correct for Ndigbo to endorse Atiku, given the prevailing political scenario of rotation of president between North and South, especially where two Fulani Muslim brothers – Buhari and Atiku – are frontrunners in the 2019 presidential election.
“We are enthusiastically gratified that the Ohanaeze leadership has come to terms with real politics unlike in 2015 when they placed all Igbo eggs in one basket.”
