Ikpeazu dissolves LG councils, orders fresh polls

- About 17 legislative councils in Abia state have been closed down

- John Okeiyi, state commissioner for Information, has confirmed the occurrence

- Okeiyi said tenure of council chairmen and the legislative arm expired in 2018

Emerging reports have claimed that Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia state governor, has dismissed the 17 local government chairmen and closed down their legislative councils

Ikpeazu's action was contained in a statement by Chief John Okeiyi, the state commissioner for Information on Thursday, January 3. Okeiyi said the tenure of the council chairmen and the legislative arm expired on December 28.

Governor Ikpeazu directed the state Independent electoral Commission to commence preparations for the conduct of new elections into the various elective positions within the local government system.

The statement read: “As required by relevant state law, the chairmen and other elected or appointed officials are expected to formally hand over to their respective local government heads of Service (HOS) who would temporarily see to the smooth operations of the local governments pending further announcement.

“The governor has also directed the Abia state Independent Electoral Commission to commence preparations for the conduct of new elections into the various positions within the local government system and advise on date and other requirements for the earliest conduct of the polls.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Abia state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, appointed teenager student, Chineme Joy Ota, as one-day governor in the state.

The inauguration of the teenager governor took place in Umuahia, the state capital, on Tuesday, December 25.

Ikpeazu, at the event, expressed appreciation for the good performance of Abia students in public examinations in the last four years.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year.
