How the NJC must act over CJN’s suspension, appointment of Tanko - Mamora, Igbokwe, others speak

- Olorunnimbe Mamora says the way the NJC handles the issue concerning Onnoghen and Tanko Muhammad would determine how the judiciary would be affected

- Monday Ubani expresses optimism that the NJC will resolve the cases between Onnoghen and the current acting CJN

- Joe Igbokwe, however, wonders why the JNC would query the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria Tanko Muhammad

A former deputy minority leader at the Senate, Olorunnimbe Mamora, and some Nigerians have given the National Judicial Council (NJC) a task over the suspension of Walter Onnoghen and the appointment of Tanko Muhammad.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 28, over the current decision of the NJC to query Onnoghen and Muhammad, Mamora who noted that this is a trying time for the council, added that the world is watching how the issue would be resolved.

According to him, the issue is mishandled by the NJC, it is not only the judiciary that would suffer it.

“The eyes of the entire world are on them. My position is wait and see because I don’t know what informed the NJC to have arrived at those decisions,” he said.

On his part, a former second vice chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Monday Ubani, said he was sure the NJC will resolve the crisis.

“NJC will solve the problems the judiciary had encountered in Onnoghen’s matter in a manner that will be satisfactory to all parties involved.

“I am happy with the development, NJC and the judiciary will work together to strengthen our judicial system,” he said.

Speaking over the issue, the publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state, Joe Igbokwe, said: “I can’t understand why the NJC had to issue query to the acting CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad.

“The NJC is trying to work on our psychology; they want to give Onnogeh soft landing; they are trying to cover up something; why issue query on Justice Muhammad. All the tactics will not work . Let’s wait and see.”

Legit.ng earlier reported that the National Judicial Council issued a seven-day ultimatum to the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen to respond to a petition filed against him by the office of the attorney-general of the federation.

The NJC also issued a seven-day ultimatum to the acting CJN, Ibrahim Muhammad, to respond to alleged breach of its rule.

It also referred petition written against Danladi Umar, the Code of Conduct Tribunal chairman, to the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC).
