Legit.ng gathers that El-Rufai said the senator is “putting politics above common sense” by using his position to frustrate the development of Kaduna state.

El-Rufai said the people were quite “disappointed by the attitude of the senators" representing the state, while also claiming that the expectations and ambitions of the Kaduna state government have been realized to some extent.

He claimed the state government's efforts to obtain a $350 million loan which would have helped in the area of infrastructure, were frustrated by Sani and two other lawmakers representing Kaduna.

Shehu Sani, who represents Kaduna Cantral in the upper legislative chamber, had previously stated that Kaduna state was the second most indebted state in the country and as such, wasn't qualified for the loan.

He said Kaduna state was indebted to “over $225million and he (El-Rufai) was asking us to approve $350 million for him and then the state will be indebted to over half a billion dollars”.

According to Sani, “a non-oil producing state with very low internally generated revenue” needed to be saved from the “chains and shackles of debt” which “he (El-Rufai)” was going to get them involved in.

The governor, however, disagreed with the lawmaker, saying "anyone who represents a people and does not want the benefits of those people is clearly an enemy of the people”.

He added that Shehu Sani uses words without knowing their meaning, noting that “there is no way a state government can borrow without clearance from the debt management office of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

He said: “There is no way the World Bank will lend you or any other person money without doing their numbers."

El-Rufai queried: “Is Shehu Sani as knowledgeable or does he know enough economics or financial management to contest the judgment of these institutions?”

According to the governor, all Shehu Sani has said is just to “justify taking actions against the interest of 10 million people”.

Though agreeing that after Lagos, Kaduna state has the highest amount of foreign debt, El-Rufai, however, stressed that “what is important is not the level of debt but debt sustainability”.

The governor said he is working with President Muhammadu Buhari and is confident that the loan issue will be resolved soon enough.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
