FG initiates N91bn 10-year plan to address herdsmen, farmers clashes

- A 10-year National Livestock Transformation Plan has been initiated by the federal government as part of efforts to address clashes between herdsmen and farmers

- In the plan's first phase, seven states which have been affected by herdsmen/farmers clashes, will each get grazing reserves with four ranches

- Farmers are expected to recoup N350,000 per cow at the selling rate of N900 per kilogramme, as per the plan

As part of efforts to address clashes between herdsmen and farmers, a 10-year National Livestock Transformation Plan has been initiated by the federal government.

According to Sahara Reporters, quoting Daily Trust, the government's plan is expected to gulp about N91bn in investments and will yield a two trillion naira profit over the 10-year period.

Legit.ng gathers that the seven pilot states of Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, and Zamfara which have been affected by herdsmen/farmers clashes, will each get grazing reserves with four ranches in the plan's first phase.

According to the plan, ranchers and rearers will be encouraged to bring their cattle to a fattening site wherein the cattle will be fed so as to boost average weight from 200-250 kg to 450-500kg.

Livestok farmers are expected to recoup N350,000 per cow at the selling rate of N900 per kilogramme, if this is done.

The plan states that: “Funding would be provided to cover the cost of fattening. Once cattle are enrolled in the programme, the asset owner will sign an agreement with the lender to allow for all cattle to be sold at specified weight range.

“Upon sale, lender deducts the cost of fattening from realized value, and cattle owner keeps the remainder of profit, minimizing risk and upfront investment."

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the federal government presented a six point plan to end the growing crisis between herdsmen and farmers across Nigeria.

The presentation of the new plan was made by the technical adviser to the National Economic Council (NEC), Andrew Kwasari, in Abuja and attended by the minister of agriculture and rural development, Audu Ogbeh, and the Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom.

During the presentation, Kwasari showed that the plan stemmed from the meetings and recommendations by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and NEC in 2017.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year. This did not however, materialize. According to the release, the project will have a four to five-year execution time after the signing of the FID.
