The programme, which is intended to finance healthcare, was initiated by the World Bank and the federal government.

Other states benefitting from the programme include Borno which got $13 million, FCT ($9 million), Kano ($8 million), Nasarawa ($7.5 million), Adamawa ($7 million), Niger ($6 million), Jigawa (N5.6 million).

Other states that benefitted include Ondo, Edo, Anambra, Bauchi, Ekiti, Benue, among others.

Speaking on the programme, the Osun state commisioner of health, Rafiu Isamotu: “The state wants a paradigm shift from what they had where a lot of development partners bring money into developing the health sector and results are not being seen”.

“The more you spend positively, the more money you win. Basically because we have moved from where we were in 2016, that is what won us the money.

“We hope to do better and move first but if care is not taken there is a tendency of moving to zero. We hope we do not.

"We are also one of the six states to benefit from the initial rollout of the BHCPF, we are prepared for it. We already have our health Insurance scheme in place as well as the Primary Health Care Development Board."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the federal government was seeking ways to improve efficiency in the operations of public hospitals and re-equip them to save foreign exchange drain arising from medical tourism.

The minister of state for health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, made the statement at a news briefing to commemorate the “5th World Universal Health Coverage Day,” in Abuja on Wednesday, December 12, 2018.

The theme for the commemoration was “Unite for universal health coverage”, and the slogan was “Now is the time for collective action.’’

He said that efforts were currently on-going to kick-start the first phase of UHC in Abia, Osun, Katsina, Yobe, Edo and Federal Capital Territory.
