Fake news may start World War 3 - Soyinka warns

- Wole Soyinka warned that fake news peddling may cause World War 3

- The Nobel Laureate expressed worry about the menace, particularly in Nigeria

- Soyinka also lamented that many false statements have been attributed to him

The spread of fake news has become a threat to mankind and may cause World War 3, Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has said.

According to The Punch, Soyinka said this in a symposium organised by the BBC News on Wednesday, January 9, tagged Countering Fake News.

His words: “I’ve said this before that fake news may cause World War 3 and the fake news will be started by a Nigerian.”

The renowned playwright also lamented that many false statements have been attributed to him.

He cited an example of a fake report that was attributed to him during the 2015 presidential election.

“During the last presidential election I was quoted as saying that it serves President Jonathan right for marrying an illiterate.

“Sometimes some people quote me as saying if you vote for a particular candidate, your mother is a goat or your father is a gorilla,” he said.

Soyinka also recalled that last year he saw his obituary many times on social media causing many people to call his phone.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Professor Wole Soyinka raised an alarm over his identity being stolen and used by a Nigerian in Poland for business purpose.

Soyinka, addressing a cross section of audience at Freedom Park in an event marking the 70th anniversary of human rights and worldwide reading for press freedom in memory of Jamal Khashoggi, stressed on the need to take the issue of stolen identity with seriousness.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year.
