The Almighty presidential elections 2019 is holding very soon, and as a result, there have been expected national tensions but most Nigerians are not exactly taken aback by the pensive developments. However, in an unexpected fashion, the upcoming election also seems to be taking its toll on Nigerian families even leading up to the divorce of a once happily married couple!
As surprising as it may sound, a Nigerian man named Abdullahi Yada’u recently made it known that he divorced his wife because she had a different political view from his. The man who comes from Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State claimed that his wife had insisted on voting for Buhari even after he tried to persuade her to vote for Atiku Abubakar.
Yada'u who made these statements in an interview with BBC added that in the past election which held in 2015, he and and his wife named Hafsat Suleiman both voted for Muhammadu Buhari, who at the time, contested under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He had voted for the current president only because of the strong persuasion of his wife. Yada'u who was thoroughly dissatisfied with the government of Buhari decided not to vote for him again as he sought for a re-election on the platform of the same party, APC.

He then set about the task of convincing his wife not to vote for Buhari, but to rather steer her loyalty in the direction of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Despite his pleas and ploys, Hafsat has remained unyielding in her decision to vote for Buhari. This eventually led to a quarrel between them. During the course of their argument, Yada'u slapped his wife. In reaction, she ran away to her parent's house.

Yada'u narrated what later transpired after that. He said: “I told her that she must not vote for him but she insisted which led to a quarrel which attracted the attention of our neighbours, I slapped her and told her to choose between voting for Buhari and staying with me. She ran away.
“Later her parents called me and I narrated to them what transpired between us. But still my wife insisted on voting for Mr Buhari, that’s how I divorced her in the presence of her parents.”

Their divorce has saddened a lot of relatives including Ibrahim Suleiman, the elder brother of Hafsat. His sadness was especially affected by the action of Yada'u. Although he would have loved to intervene in the matter and probably stimulated a reconciliation, his father had prevented him from doing so.
However, this did not stop him from expressing his grievance. He said: "“He really disgraced us. They have been having issues even in the previous election. She is the one that convinced him to vote for Buhari, now he insisted on voting for Mr Atiku Abubakar. We decided that we will not allow her to go back to him again.”
