Dasuki files new application in court, invites Olanipekun, Falana, others in his trial

- Sambo Dasuki has applied for some 'friends of the court' to become part of his ongoing trial

- The friends of the court invited in the application by Dasuki include Femi Falana; the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Paul Usoro

- Others are two former presidents of the NBA, Oluwole Olanipekun and Olisa Agbakoba; a teacher of law, Koyinsola Ajayi; and Oyechi Ikpeazu

The past National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, has filed a fresh application before the Federal High Court in Abuja over his ongoing $2.1 billion trial.

Dasuki in the application urged the court to invite some senior lawyers, popularly referred to as "amici curiae" - friends of the court - for his trial.

The friends of the court are set of individuals usually senior lawyers who are not party to a particular case. They can be solicited by a party to assist the court by offering advise or expertise on a case.

Premium Times reports that Dasuki's request for the invitation was made through his lawyer on Wednesday, January 9, - the scheduled resumption of his trial.

However the matter was adjourned to Tuesday, January 29, for continuation of trial by the judge, Ahmed Muhammed, after the application was filed.

Among the 'friends of the court' to be invited include renowned human rights activist and senior lawyer, Femi Falana; the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Paul Usoro; two former presidents of the association, Oluwole Olanipekun and Olisa Agbakoba; a teacher of law, Koyinsola Ajayi; and Oyechi Ikpeazu.

Also, the defence counsel, Adeola Adedipe, in his submission prayed the court to step down the hearing of an application of December 11 for that of January 8 in which the former NSA applied for amici curiae.

However in his assertion, Oladipupo Opeseyi, the prosecution counsel said: “We have just been served the further affidavit, although, the application for December 11 is liberal for hearing and we are ready to go on.

“But we would request a few days to enable us react to the new application served on us," the counsel added.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Raymond Dokpesi, the chairman of Daar Investment and Holdings Company Limited, told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, October 19, that he is not the launderer of the N2.1 billion as alleged in an ongoing trial but Dasuki, who paid the funds to him in 2015.

Dokpesi spoke through his lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), while arguing their no-case submission which they filed after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) closed case against him with the 14th prosecution witness in May 2018.

The EFCC had charged Dokpesi and Daar Investment with money laundering and procurement fraud involving the sum of N2.1bn which they allegedly received from the office of the national security adviser between January and March 2015.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
