CJN trial: South-south governors hold emergency meeting in Abuja

- A forum of south-south governors has fixed a meeting to discuss issues on the planned arraignment the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen

- The all-important meeting, according to an aide of Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, is to be held in Abuja on Sunday, January 13

- The governor stated that although he is yet to get details on the proposed arraignment, the forum will address a press conference after the meeting

The forum of south-south governors, in view of the proposed arrangement of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen at the code of conduct tribunal which is to place on Monday, January 14, over non declaration of assets, has planned an emergency meeting in Abuja to be held on Sunday, January 14, Daily Trust reports.

The special adviser to Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, who is also the chairman of the forum, Fidelis Soriwei, informed newsmen in his statement that the governors will deliberate on the recent development involving the CJN, the security of the Niger Delta, during and after the election and the pressing issue of derivation.

On his part, Governor Dickson said that he was yet to gather details on the developments at the Supreme Court concerning the CJN, it is a grave and dangerous escalation, coming a few weeks to the general elections.

The governor revealed that the forum would address a press conference after the said meeting to convey the position of the zone to the Nigerians, adding that stakeholders must do their utmost to ensure that democracy is upheld especially as the general elections approach.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the federal government had allegedly asked the CJN to immediately vacate his office as head of the nation’s judiciary over issues bordering on non-declaration of assets.

Legit.ng gathered that the federal government would arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led- Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on Monday, January 14.

The CJN is facing charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.
