Checkout how teams gain promotion from lower division to the Premier League

The Nigeria National League (NNL) is the second tier of league football in the country. It was formerly known as National Division 1 in the 1990’s.

However, from 1997-2011, the NNL was divided into two groups- 1A for teams based in the northern and 1B for teams in the southern region.

At the end of the matches, the top two clubs from each division are promoted to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), for the preceding campaign.

However, during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns the divisions were increased to four with eight teams each, with the winners from each division promoted to the NPFL.

Four clubs from each division are then relegated to the less-glamorous amateur first division.

Since 2012 the league reverted to two divisions of sixteen. But in 2015 campaign, it returned to four divisions of eight teams.

However, with the leadership crisis that rocked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) last year, the NNL have ruled no club will be relegated.

On the other hand, eight clubs - Gombe Utd, Kogi Utd, Kada City, Real Stars, Bendel Insurance, Delta Force, 3SC and Remo Stars took part in a Super 8 tournament to determine four that will gain promotion to NPFL.

Thus at the NNL Congress it was agreed that the 2018/2019 season will be played in an abridged format involving 4 divisions.

Interestingly, in the NPFL no team will be relegated to the NNL but four teams from the NNL will be promoted, meaning there will be an abridged league format of two divisions of 12 teams with the champions to be decided through a Super 4 playoff.

Six clubs will be relegated to the NNL for the 2019/2020 campaign with only two gaining promotion to formally return to the NPFL to a 20-team league format.

The Transitional Phase of African Poetry

The Transitional Phase The second phase, which we have chosen to call transitional, is represented by the poetry of writers like Abioseh Nicol, Gabriel Okara, Kwesi Brew, Dennis Brutus, Lenrie Peters and Joseph Kariuki. This is poetry which is written by people we normally refer to as modem and who may be thought of as belonging to the third phase. The characteristics of this poetry are its competent and articulate use of the received European language, its unforced grasp of Africa’s physical, cultural and socio-political environment and often its lyricism. To distinguish this type of poetry we have to refer back to the concept of appropriation we introduced earlier. At the simplest and basic level, the cultural mandate of possessing a people’s piece of the earth involves a mental and emotional homecoming within the physical environment. Poems like Brew’s ‘‘Dry season”, Okara’s “Call of the River Nun”, Nicol’s “The meaning of Africa” and Soyinka’s “Season”, to give a few examples,

The pioneering phase of African Poetry

The pioneering phase We have called the first phase that of the pioneers. But since the phrase “pioneer poets” has often been used of writers of English expression like Osadebay, Casely-Hayford and Dei-Anag, we should point out that our “pioneer phase” also includes Negritude poets of French expression. The poetry of this phase is that of writers in “exile” keenly aware of being colonials, whose identity was under siege. It is a poetry of protest against exploitation and racial discrimination, of agitation for political independence, of nostalgic evocation of Africa’s past and visions of her future. However, although these were themes common to poets of both English and French expression, the obvious differences between the Francophone poets and the Anglophone writers of the 1930s and 1940s have been generally noted. Because of the intensity with which they felt their physical exile from Africa, coupled with their exposure to the experimental contemporary modes of writing in F
