CAN reveals date of nationwide prayers for 2019 elections

- CAN has declared January 10 a national day of prayers for Christians and other interested Nigerians

- The Christian body says prayers are to be offered for a successful, violence-free elections and for the return of abducted Dapchi school girl Leah Sharibu and others still in captivity

- CAN urges all Christians to pray for smooth conduct of the election and remains confident that Nigeria would overcome politicians wishing violence on the country

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has named Thursday, January 10, as a national day of prayers for peaceful, free, fair and credible general elections.

Daily Sun reports that the leadership of CAN also declared the day as one of national prayers for the freedom of Leah Sharibu and others in captivity of the Boko Haram terrorists.

According to the report, the declaration was made by CAN’s president Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle in a statement released in Abuja, on Saturday, January 5.

The cleric noted that the spiritual exercise would allow Christians the opportunity to ask God for good and godly leaders at all levels.

The statement, signed by the media aide to CAN President, Pastor Bayo Oladeji, noted that the day of prayers would also be used to ask God to frustrate efforts of people that had risen against Nigeria in violence.

CAN urged all Christian politicians, especially those contesting elections, Christian groups or organisations, and all stakeholders to participate in the spiritual exercise. It also called on its states’ chairmen and denominational leaders to gather members for the programme.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng also reported that the chairman of CAN in Keffi local government area of Nasarawa state, Rev Danladi Ndohon, on Wednesday, January 2, warned Christian faithful and Nigerians in general not to promote political violence.

Ndohon gave the advice during the association’s feast in Keffi.

The cleric, who said that the forthcoming elections should not be “a do-or-die affair,’’ also cautioned against vote buying and selling.

“Vote buying and selling of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) is in total violation of the constitution and those involved are not helping the country,” he said.
