Breaking: CCT adjourns Onnoghen's alleged false asset declaration case indefinitely

The Code of Conduct Tribunal has adjourned indefinitely the trial of the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, who is facing charges for over alleged non-declaration of assets at the tribunal.

At the resumed hearing ON Monday, January 28, the chairman of the CCT, Danladi Umar, while giving his ruling said the matter has been adjourned sine dine pending ruling of the Court of Appeal on the application for stay of proceeding filed by Onnoghen.

The CCT chairman upon presiding over the matter at 11.24 am on Monday, January 28, had apologised for the delay over today's hearing.

Although Umar did not give reasons for the delay, sources within the CCT told Legit.ng that the hearing was delayed because of the absence of the third judge of the tribunal which only had Umar and Julie Anabo.

The source said: "Chairman is waiting for the third judge who is not around now for the sitting to proceed.

While Musa Ibrahim announced appearance for the prosecution, a senior advocate of Nigeria, Kanu Agabi announced his appearance for the defence alongside 42 other lawyers.

The prosecution further asks for adjournment on the matter pending the ruling of the Court of Appeal on the matter.

Agabi in his response to the plea by the prosecution said his team is not in objection to the appeal for adjournment.

"You can adjourn sine dine, it is always in your power to call us back,"Agabi said.

He however, pleaded with the CCT chairman to ask the tribunal clerks yo make available recordings of previous proceedings to the parties involved.

Agabi in his plea said the recording would serve as a guide for the parties on the matter.

Meanwhile, the entrance of the National Secretariat of the Nigerian Bar Association was on Monday, January 28, besieged by members of the National Interest Defenders and Lawyers in Defense of Democracy over the suspension of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

President Muhammadu Buhari has removed Onnoghen and swore-in Tanko Mohammed as acting chief justice of Nigeria on Friday, January 25.

The Punch reports that the protesters called on the president to rescind his decision and return Onnoghen.
