60% of undergraduate projects are plagiarised - NUC's ex-executive

- Not less than 60% of undergraduate projects in Nigeria are copied from sources that are not acknowledged

- This was disclosed by Professor Peter Okebukola, a former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC)

- Okebukola said that even lecturers are included in the crime as most of them copy and paste materials from Wikipedia for the works

Professor Peter Okebukola, a former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), on Tuesday, January 22, said that 60% of undergraduate projects in the country are plagiarised.

Okebukola made this revelation at the Edo state University, Iyamho, during the commissioning of the CANVAS Learning Management System (LMS) in the institution, Daily Trust reports.

He said: “Plagiarism would mean copy from somebody without attributing it to the person. Many of our students even lectures will just go to Wikipedia and copy the page and past it as if they are the authors.

"So when the lecturer, who may be because of the volume of the work could not go through, will say my students are brilliant not knowing that they are copy desk.”

Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, represented by the registrar of the National Board for Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) Professor Ifeoma Mercy Isiugo-Abanihe, urged the institution to work with top stakeholders in the industrial, manufacturing and agricultural sectors for proper use of the facility.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government met on Monday, January 21, to resume talks on how to resolve the impasse over the two-month-old industrial action.

The disclosure was made on Friday, January 18, by the national president of the union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi.

Legit.ng gathered Ogunyemi said there was no fresh development with regard to the resolution of the dispute between ASUU and the federal government.
