Year in Review: Top 20 bigwig politicians that dumped their political parties in 2018

Year 2018 witnessed major alignments and re-alignments in Nigeria’s political structure. As the country moves closer to the 2019 general elections, major politicians cutting across all the political parties jumped from one party to another with a view to pitching their tents with the parties where their interests are best guaranteed.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the major opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other parties experienced both swelling and depletion in ranks, owing to massive defections.

From APC to PDP

  • Atiku Abubakar

In November 2017, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, dumped Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He later joined the PDP and emerged the opposition party’s presidential candidate in the forthcoming 2019 elections.

  • Senate president Bukola

Saraki announced his defection to the PDP on Tuesday, July 31.

  • Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state

Regarded as Saraki’s godson, Kwara governor also announced his defection to the PDP immediately after his godfather’s announcement

  • Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state

After series of unconfirmed announcements and denials, Governor Ortom also eventually defected to the PDP.

  • Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state

After several weeks of speculation, Governor Tambuwal of Sokoto on Tuesday, August 1, also defected to the PDP. He contested the party's presidential ticket but lost to Atiku.

  • Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West)
  • Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi
  • Senator Musa Kwankwaso (Kano-Central)

From PDP to APC

  • Senator Godswill Akpabio

Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom and former majority leader of the House dumped the PDP for the APC in August 2018.

  • (Former) Kwara state PDP chairman

The chairman of the PDP in Kwara state, Iyiola Oyedepo, insisted he can never work with Senate president Bukola Saraki and announced his defection to APC on Wednesday, August 1.

  • Ibrahim Shekau (former governor of Kano state)
  • Segun Adewunmi (former deputy speaker of Ekiti state House of Assembly)

Segun Adewunmi said goodbye to the PDP and embraced the APC shortly before the July 14 governorship election in the state.

  • Senator Fatimat Raji Rasaki (representing Ekiti Central senatorial district)

Senator Rasaki also defected to the APC shortly before the July 14 governorship election in the state.

  • Prince Dayo Adeyeye (former minister of state for works)
  • Sunday Akinniyi (Chief Whip of Ekiti state House of Assembly)
  • Moshood Salvador (former PDP chairman in Lagos state)

Major defections to other parties

  • Shehu Sani - APC to PRP

Sen. Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central) on Tuesday, October 3, joined People’s Redemption Party (PRP), three days after he left the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sani made this known in a statement by his special adviser, political and ideology, Mr Suleiman Ahmed, in Abuja.

  • Uche Nwosu - APC to AA

Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu,‎ defected to the Action Alliance party (AA) after failing to secure the governorship ticket of the APC.

  • Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade - APC to APM

Member of the House of Representatives, Hon Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade, who represents Egado South and Ipokia federal constituency of Ogun State also dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to another party.

Akinlade who was the preferred governorship candidate of the Ogun state governor, Senator lbikunle Amosun, has defected to Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
