Woman without uterus welcomes baby girl after rare surgery (photo)

- The world's first uterus transplant from a deceased donor has been deemed a success after the birth of a healthy baby girl

- The mother had been born without a uterus as the result of a rare syndrome

- The medical breakthrough has brought hope to women who are unable to conceive due to medical issues with their uterus

The world's first baby, from a uterus transplant, has been born.

In 2016, the new operation was conducted in Brazil. It proved to be a success, which could help scores of women who are unable to conceive due to uterine problems.

According to Lancet, a medical journal, the beautiful baby girl was born a year ago. Until this breakthrough, the only available options for women was either adoption or surrogacy.

In 2014, the Swedish conducted the first successful uterine transplant. In this case, the donor was alive. But, because it was hard to source willing live donors, experts wanted to try the same procedure, but with a dead donor.

A number of attempts were made to use the uterus of dead donors in the States, the Czech Republic as well as Turkey before the success reported on Wednesday, December 5.

Dr Dani Ejzenberg, from the teaching hospital of the University of Sao Paulo, called the procedure a ‘medical milestone’.

According to reports, the baby's mother was born without a uterus, due to a rare syndrome. Her donor was a 45-year old woman who had died from a stroke. The donor's uterus was removed and transplanted in a 10-hour-long surgery.

The transplant process had involved the woman taking medication to prevent her body from rejecting the new organ, including antimicrobials and anti-clotting treatments. After five months, the uterus had shown no sign of rejection and the woman had even been menstruating regularly.

After seven months, fertilised eggs were implanted. Ten days later, doctors announced she was pregnant. At 36 weeks, doctors delivered a healthy baby girl via c-section. The newborn weighed 2.5 kilograms.

By the time the report was published, the little girl weighed 7.2 kilograms, she's breastfeeding and is in good health.
