Uche Diala, who presented the gift to the president, said that the gesture was to thank God on behalf of the president and “tell him that Nigerians of goodwill wish him well”.

He said: “We have a president who had a health challenge, but God healed him, and he came out stronger for us.

“This celebration today is to felicitate and identify with president because he means well for our dear country.

“We want him to return in 2019 to complete the good work and that is why we donated this money, which is a contribution by ordinary Nigerians to support his campaign."

Femi Adesina, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, who received the gifts on his behalf, expressed gratitude to the group for their “show of love and best wishes”.

He said that the event was a clear testimony that Nigerians, irrespective of tribe and religion, cared for their leaders.

He said: “For people to gather here on their own to mark the president’s birthday in his absence is an indication that they are proud of him.

“This kind of thing is not common in our political history, which shows that there are people who wish president well against all odds."

Also, Efe Williams, a co-convener and organiser of the event, said the event was “a sort of thanksgiving to God for keeping the president strong and healthy at 76”.

He said: “Many people wished that he should have been dead by now, but God has a better plan, which deserves celebration.

“Buharists Hangouts are not just APC members, but Nigerians that love their president and wish him well."

Williams, therefore, urged Nigerians, irrespective of tribal, religious and political differences, to always support and encourage their leaders.
