Oyo NUJ threatens to arrest, jail fake journalists

- Oyo NUJ has begun clampdown on the fake journalists across the state

- The chairman of Oke-Ogun NUJ chapel, Semiu Azeez, said that the union would not allow charlatans to give the profession a bad name in the state

- Azeez emphasised that any fake journalist caught would be made to face the full wrath of the law

The Oke-Ogun federated chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Oyo state, has commenced the clampdown on fake journalists in its bid to ensure and sustain professionalism across the state.

Legit.ng regional reporter in Oyo, Imran Khalid, reports that the chapel's chairman, Semiu Azeez, disclosed at the union's meeting held at Tede, Atisbo local government area of the state, that there were many fake journalists at Oke-Ogun axis of the state who had no mastery of the profession and who could not be identified with a particular medium.

Azeez added that there were cases of many fake journalists whose names could not be mentioned for the sake of security, stressing that they had been practising the profession claiming to be members of Oke-Ogun, NUJ chapel.

He said the people who had been impersonating the regional professional body should desist doing so or else if they were caught they would face the full wrath of the law.

He disclosed that the notable members of the union were the ones who had recently participated at the biometric registration exercise and who had paid the checkoff dues to date.

He added that Oke-Ogun NUJ was a regional journalism body operating and tailoring its programmes and policies in line with state and national chapters respectively.

He said any illegal practice and dastardly acts capable of painting the union would be severely frowned at.

Azeez also said the union was for every pen pusher who was ready to abide its rules and regulations.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the operatives of the Lagos state police command attached to Ojo division arrested a fake lawyer who had been operating at Ojo Magistrate’s Court for three years.

It was reported that police spokesman, Chike Oti, identified the suspected fake lawyer as Uche Julian Nwajiakwu.

The suspect allegedly told the police that he fell in love with law practice when his friend commissioned him to act as a lawyer in order to serve his tenant a quit notice and he was handsomely rewarded after the deed was done.
