Reports coming in from Old Trafford suggest he has been considered as the ideal man to replace Mourinho on an interim basis until the end of the season..

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg also prematurely congratulated her compatriot on his new appointment before hastily deleting her tweet on Tuesday evening.

"Great day for Norwegian football. good luck keeping control of the Red Devils, Ole Gunner Solkjaer," she tweeted.

The Norwegian managed United's reserve side from 2008 for two years before leaving for Molde where he has just extended his contract with the Norweigian side until 2021.

Solksjaer made 235 appearances for the Red Devils and scored 91 goals in that period.

And of course, no United fan can forget his injury-time winner in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Manchester United sacked Jose Mourinho barely three years in charge at the Theatre of Dreams.

United have recorded poor strings of results all through their campaign including their 3-1 bashing at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

Mourinho's assistant and former captain Micheal Carrick is reportedly going to be in charge until a new manager is appointed.
