Federal Government ban only exist on newspaper pages - PDP chieftains

- The federal government recently claimed to have banned 29 prominent Nigerians from traveling abroad until their alleged corruption cases are determined

- Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwermadu and PDP presidential aspirant, Attahiru Bafarawa are on the list

- The duo dismissed the list saying it only exists in the pages of newspapers

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and ex- presidential aspirant, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, have reacted to the list of Nigerians prominent banned from travelling abroad for alleged corruption which they featured.

The duo, however, dismissed the list, saying it only exists in the pages of newspapers.

According to them, they were not banned from traveling abroad because there was no any official communication to that effect.

Ekweremadu in a statement sent to journalists by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, said the story banning his boss from travelling was far from the truth.

His words: “Ekweremadu’s position is that the Constitution demands every public officer to declare his or her assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau every four years, a provision he had since fulfilled, hence his refusal to fill fresh asset declaration forms forwarded to him by the panel contrary to the constitution.

“It is also his position that the Public Property Special Provisions Act, CAP R4 LFN, 2004, otherwise known as Decree No 3, 1984, which the panel relied on to charge public officials to court has become obsolete and power to investigate non-asset declaration is now vested in the Code of Conduct Bureau by the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Therefore, only the Code of Conduct Bureau can receive asset declaration forms from public officers.”

On his part, Bafarawa in a telephone interview with Daily Trust, said if the Federal Government had anything against him, it should go to court instead of trying him and other opposition leaders on the pages of newspapers.

“My international passport is with me; nobody communicated to me that I have been banned. I was in court and secured judgement in my favour but it seems there is no rule of law anymore…The courts are being undermined, I don’t think we are running a democratic government anymore,” he said.

The federal government had banned 29 prominent Nigerians from travelling out of the country following the ongoing alleged corruption cases against them.

The special presidential investigation panel for the recovery of public property, Okoi Obono-Obla, at a media briefing on Monday, December 17, said the 29 people will be banned from traveling until their cases are determined.

“We have compiled 29 names and submitted to the controller general of the Immigration Service. The 29 people will be banned from traveling because they have corruption charges. Their names have been given to Immigration Service. They won’t be allowed to travel,” he said.
