2019: S/South governor berates APC; says he is unmoved by ruling party’s ‘ranting’

- Akwa Ibom governor, Udom Emmanuel, says he is not moved by the ranting of the APC, ahead of the governorship election in the state in 2019

- He described the members of the opposition boasting about taking over the state as “empty vessels” making the loudest noise

- Emmanuel expressed joy that over 20,000 members of the APC and other parties had defected to the PDP in Akwa Ibom

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has stated that he is unmoved by what he described as the ‘ranting’ of the opposition who have been boasting of their plans to take over the state in the 2019 elections.

He made the comment at the Ibom Hall Ground in Uyo, as over 20,000 units, wards and chapter officers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, December 10, The Guardian reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the governor described the members of the opposition boasting about taking over the state as “empty vessels” making the loudest noise.

He assured the defectors that as a result of their decision, their names would be written in gold; and said the PDP stood for peace and would not shed anyone’s blood in its quest for political power.

Emmanuel further expressed happiness over the development and lauded the defectors for taking such a bold step.

He said: “Today, it is a thing of joy that over 20,000 have come over to the PDP. This is unprecedented in the history of our state.

“What you are doing today is not about me, it is not about the party chairman, or any other person, but about the soul of Akwa Ibom state.”

The PDP chairman in Akwa Ibo, Paul Ekpo, also spoke at the event. He described the number of defectors as unprecedented in the history of the party.

Ekpo also stated that the PDP’s message of industrialisation, peace, stability and workability was what touched the minds of the defectors to join the party.

The Transitional Phase of African Poetry

The Transitional Phase The second phase, which we have chosen to call transitional, is represented by the poetry of writers like Abioseh Nicol, Gabriel Okara, Kwesi Brew, Dennis Brutus, Lenrie Peters and Joseph Kariuki. This is poetry which is written by people we normally refer to as modem and who may be thought of as belonging to the third phase. The characteristics of this poetry are its competent and articulate use of the received European language, its unforced grasp of Africa’s physical, cultural and socio-political environment and often its lyricism. To distinguish this type of poetry we have to refer back to the concept of appropriation we introduced earlier. At the simplest and basic level, the cultural mandate of possessing a people’s piece of the earth involves a mental and emotional homecoming within the physical environment. Poems like Brew’s ‘‘Dry season”, Okara’s “Call of the River Nun”, Nicol’s “The meaning of Africa” and Soyinka’s “Season”, to give a few examples,

The pioneering phase of African Poetry

The pioneering phase We have called the first phase that of the pioneers. But since the phrase “pioneer poets” has often been used of writers of English expression like Osadebay, Casely-Hayford and Dei-Anag, we should point out that our “pioneer phase” also includes Negritude poets of French expression. The poetry of this phase is that of writers in “exile” keenly aware of being colonials, whose identity was under siege. It is a poetry of protest against exploitation and racial discrimination, of agitation for political independence, of nostalgic evocation of Africa’s past and visions of her future. However, although these were themes common to poets of both English and French expression, the obvious differences between the Francophone poets and the Anglophone writers of the 1930s and 1940s have been generally noted. Because of the intensity with which they felt their physical exile from Africa, coupled with their exposure to the experimental contemporary modes of writing in F
