President Muhammadu Buhari has given reasons why there was an increase in petrol pump price and electricity tariff across the country.  Recall that Nigerians had vowed to protest the increase following the announcement by government.  Buhari, who was represented by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the ministerial performance review retreat, blamed the COVID-19 pandemic as reason for the increase in petrol pump price.  He said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a severe downturn in the funds available to finance our budget and has severely hampered our capacity. One of the steps we took at the beginning of the crisis in March when oil prices collapsed at the height of the global lockdown was the deregulation of the price of Premium Motor Spirit such that the benefit of lower prices at that time was passed to consumers.   “This was welcome by all and sundry. The effect of deregulation though is that PMS prices will change with changes in global oil prices. This means quite re

Letter From A Friend: A Journey Into Hell On Earth By Bayo Oluwasanmi

Bayo Oluwasanmi My Dear Friend: My sincere apology for ending abruptly our last telephone conversation. I hurriedly hung up because the State Secret Police were eavesdropping.  We live in interesting times. Country differs from country. Some are characterized by predictable march toward greater freedom and prosperity. Yet, some remain stubbornly excluded from global advancement and civilization. My country is in the latter group. Here in my country, problems are so dire and so abysmal. Three out of four people subsist on less than $1 a day. We labour under the legacy of corruption, economic backwardness, brutal leadership, unforgiving docile and ignorant citizens. We are perpetually doomed to instability because of its artificiality as a nation. A nation pasted together with dozens of warring ethnicities and nation states. Bayo Oluwasanmi My friend, have you seen misery face-to-face before? I invite you to visit my country and experience misery first hand. The misery can be

P&ID: Malami, Magu And $10bn Liability By Fola Olatunde

If truly wishes were horses, beggars won’t hesitate to take a ride. But, we all know wishes are truly not horses. The latter are what they are. You must work hard to earn them. You must have the purchasing power to own a horse before you can ride on one. Following from the above, therefore, there is no atom of doubt that the Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, SAN, wants the suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, out of the way at all cost. That’s his ultimate wish. But will his wish hereiun become a horse so he can take a ride? The jury is out. There’s more to the wish, though. The AGF is energizing his wish to make it a reality Will he succeed? He will only succeed if actually Magu did soil his hand in the course of his relentless battle against the hydra-headed monster called corruption which President Muhammadu Buhari found him worthy to lead and champion back in 2015.   It’s on record
