CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Preamble
As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power”. We all recognize this saying but few understand the empowering roles social media has played. Through social media, anyone online is empowered by an unrestricted flow of information to add to his or her knowledge bank. In today's world, it is undeniable that social media play an important role in impacting our culture, our economy and our overall view of the world. Social media have become fora where people to exchange idea, connect with one another, relate to one another and mobilize for a cause, seek advice, and offer guidance.
Social media have removed communication barriers and created decentralized communication channel and open the door for all to have a voice and participate in a democratic fashion including people in repressive countries. These media outlet accommodate a wide variety spontaneous, formal, informal, scholarly and unscholarly writings to flourish. They enable common interest based groups; such as students, to work in a collaborative group projects outside of their class. It fosters creativity and collaboration with a wide range of commentators on a number of issues such as education, economy, politics, race, health, relationship etc. Although Social media have brought about many benefits, allowing us to easily connect with friends and family around the globe, allowing us to break down international borders and cultural barriers, social media have come at a price. Social media have a negative impact on our lives because the combinations of isolation and global reach have eroded our culture.
1.2 Background to the study
Social media have changed the way we meet and interact with each other. They provide a platform to learn more about people you associate with. This can be a blessing and or a problem, however, when it comes to romantic relationships. The increased usage of social media may lead to marital problems, infidelity, and divorce.
Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.
The roots of social media stretch far deeper than one might imagine. Although it seems like a new trend, sites like Facebook are the natural outcome of many centuries of social media development. One of the most popular social media sites, Facebook according to Wikipedia survey in 2016, has 1.4 billion users around the world, nearly a fifth of the world's population, thus helping us to better understand, learn and share information instantaneously making the world look like a small village (Nicholas, 2010).
The average Facebook user spends almost an hour on the site every day, according to data provided by the company last year. A Deloitte survey (2016) found that for many Smartphone users, checking social media apps are the first thing they do in the morning – often before even getting out of bed. Of course, social interaction is a healthy and necessary part of human existence. Thousands of studies have concluded that most human beings thrive when they have strong, positive relationships with other human beings.
The challenge is that most of the work on social interaction has been conducted using “real world,” face-to-face social networks, in contrast to the types of online relationships that are increasingly common. So, while we know that old-fashioned social interaction is healthy, what about social interaction that is completely mediated through an electronic screen? When you wake up in the morning and tap on that little blue icon, what impact does it have on you?
Prior research has shown that the use of social media may weaken face-to-face relationships, reduce investment in meaningful activities, increase sedentary behavior by encouraging more screen time, lead to internet addiction, and erode self-esteem through unfavorable social comparison. Self-comparison can be a strong influence on human behavior, and because people tend to display the most positive aspects of their lives on social media, it is possible for an individual to believe that their own life compares negatively to what they see presented by others. But some skeptics have wondered if perhaps people with lower well-being are more likely to use social media, rather than social media causing lower well-being. Moreover, social media use has a positive impact on well-being through increased social support and reinforcement of real world relationships.
Marriage according to Merriam Webster (2015) is a socially or ritually recognized union between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between those spouses, as well as between them and any resulting biological or adopted children and affinity (in-laws and other family through marriage). The definition of marriage varies not only between cultures or religions, but also within them throughout their histories, evolving to both expand or contract in what is encompassed, but typically it is principally an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually sexual, are acknowledged or sanctioned. In some cultures, marriage is recommended or considered to be compulsory before pursuing any sexual activity. When defined broadly, marriage is considered a cultural universal.
Wikipedia (2017) says the word "marriage “was derived from Middle English mariage, which first appeared in 1250–1300 CE. This in turn is derived from Old French, marier (to marry), and ultimately Latin, marītāre, meaning to provide with a husband or wife and marītāri meaning to get married. The adjective marīt-us -a, -um meaning matrimonial or nuptial could also be used in the masculine form as a noun for "husband" and in the feminine form for "wife”. The related word "matrimony" derives from the Old French word matremoine, which appears around 1300 CE and ultimately derives from Latin mātrimōnium, which combines the two concepts: mater meaning "mother" and the suffix -monium signifying "action, state, or condition".
Individuals may marry for several reasons, including legal, social, libidinal, emotional, financial, spiritual, and religious purposes. Whom they marry may be influenced by socially determined rules of incest, prescriptive marriage rules, parental choice and individual desire. In some areas of the world, arranged marriage, child marriage, polygamy, and sometimes forced marriage, may be practiced as a cultural tradition.
In 2010, Facebook began to invite users to become beta testers after passing a question-and-answer-based selection process, and a set of Facebook Engineering Puzzles where users would solve computational problems which gave them an opportunity to be hired by Facebook.
As of February 2011, Facebook had become the largest online photo host, being cited by Facebook application and online photo aggregator Pixable as expecting to have 200 billion photos by summer 2018. As of October 2011, over 350 million users accessed Facebook through their mobile phones, accounting for 33% of all Facebook traffic.
On March 12, 2012, Yahoo filed suit in a U.S. federal court against Facebook weeks before the scheduled Facebook initial public offering. In its court filing, Yahoo said that Facebook had infringed on ten of its patents covering advertising, privacy controls and social networking. Yahoo had threatened to sue Facebook a month before the filing, insisting that the social network license its patents. A spokesperson for Facebook issued a statement saying "We're disappointed that Yahoo, a longtime business partner of Facebook and a company that has substantially benefited from its association with Facebook, has decided to resort to litigation". The lawsuit claims that Yahoo's patents cover basic social networking ideas such as customizing website users' experiences to their needs, adding that the patents cover ways of targeting ads to individual users. In 2012, Facebook App Center, an online mobile store, was rolled out. The store initially had 500 Facebook apps which were mostly games. On April 24, 2014, Facebook and Storyful announced a new feature called FB Newswire.
1.3 Statement of the problem
In today's world, it is undeniable that social media play an important role in impacting our culture, our economy and our overall view of the world.
Social media effects with a focus on Facebook showed that Facebook pages influence the perception of users with high exposure to specific content.
High use of the Social Media distorts users’ perception of the world (Anaeto, Onabajo&Osifeso, pp.45, 2012). Bearing in mind that Social media affects people’s perception of many other aspects of the world which includes marriage, this study seeks to assess the usage of Marriage related Facebook pages by Akure South Local Government couples.
1.4 Research Questions
A research question according to Gbolagunte and Popoola (2003, p.127) serves as a guide to the researcher in his quest for answers to problem being investigated. Thus, the following are the research questions propounded by the researcher to serve as a direction to the study.
1. To what extent are couples in Akure South Local Government exposed to Social Media?
2. To what extent are couples in Akure South Local Government aware of marriage related Facebook pages?
3. To what extent do couples in Akure South Local Government make use of Marriage related Facebook pages?
4. How has the usage of Marriage related Facebook pages influenced couples in Akure South Local Government Area?
1.5 Objectives of the study
1. To find the extent at which couples in Akure South Local Government are exposed to Social Media.

3. To find the extent to which couples in Akure South Local Government make use of Marriage related Facebook pages.
4. To find out how the usage of Marriage related Facebook pages has influenced couples in Akure South Local Government Area.
