- The APC might lose out completely in the contest for the Senate presidency in the 9th National Assembly
- There are reportedly plans by PDP senators-elect to hijack the Senate considering that three APC senators are contesting for the position
- Some of the PDP senators-elect are also exploring another option that if the APC fails to put its house in order
A report by Leadership indicates that the All Progressives Congress (APC) might lose out completely in the contest for the Senate presidency in the incoming 9th National Assembly.
Some camps in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are of the opinion that in the event that three APC senators insist in vying for the office of the Senate president, the main opposition party will mobilise and present one candidate to get block votes.
Having taken over some states from the ruling APC in the recently concluded 2019 elections, it was gathered that PDP still feels it can’t do better than the office of the Deputy Senate President in the 9th Assembly.

“If Lawan, Goje and Ndume go to the floor of the Senate as contestants, they will have more enemies within their party. It will be good for them to allow one or two person to stand for the contest,” a senator-elect from the opposition PDP said under condition of anonymity.
According to him, “Lawan is likely to emerge the Senate president because he has more support. His only problem now is that his party leadership has endorsed him without consultation and that could affect his smooth win.
“But PDP could also be a decider if Goje and Ndume could not pull some senators to their sides. Goje may not come out on the floor because he is banking on some PDP members.”
He added: “If PDP said they don’t want a deal, Goje will drop his ambition. Adams Oshiomhole nearly spoil Lawan’s show because as it is now, you can’t do without the PDP members that are more formidable. You must negotiate.”
“Politics is a game. If you ask us to flow with these people, what will be our gain?” another senator-elect from the PDP opined.
Meanwhile, there are strong indications that no fewer than 35 senators from the APC are backing former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume to clinch the seat of Senate president for the 9th Assembly.

The lawmakers are reportedly angry with the leadership of the party over its decision to impose Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan without recourse to them.
The lawmakers are also said to be angry over an alleged comment by Senator Lawan, saying all the APC state governors have donated their senators to him to ensure his victory.
