Guardiola reacts after VAR allows Llorente 'handball' goal during Spurs defeat

- Pep Guardiola has congratulated Spurs for their win against Man City but questions the effectiveness of the VAR

- Fernando Llorente's goal broke the hearts of Manchester City in the Champions League

- But a new rule has been brought that any handball of sorts will not be counted as a goal

Fernando Llorente's goal qualified Tottenham to the semi finals of the Champions League on a dramatic night at the Etihad Stadium.

Llorente came in for Moussa Sissoko in the 41st minute and bundled home what turned out to be the vital away goal in the 73rd minute.

But the referee had to take a long look at the VAR to determine if the Spaniard had deliberately handled the ball, as the ball appeared to clip his arm before striking his hip and finding it way into the net.

Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir eventually awarded the goal before VAR later disallowed a dramatic Raheem Sterling winner in injury time for a Sergio Aguero's offside in the build-up.

However, any goal similar to Llorente's goal would automatically be disallowed if it happened in next season's Champions League.

A rule change agreed by IFAB is set to be introduced across football from the start of next season would see any goal scored involving contact with the hand or arm ruled out.

But presently, it needs to be a deliberate handball in order to be canceled, rather than simply inadvertently making contact with the arm or hand as appeared to be the case with Llorente.

David Elleray, IFAB technical director, has previously explained the rule change, stating: "Deliberate handball remains an offence.

"In the past we've managed to improve the laws by focusing on outcome rather than intent.

"What we are looking at particularly in attacking situations is where the player gets a clear unfair advantage by gaining possession or control of the ball, as a result of it making contact with their hand or arm."

Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has accepted his side's Champions League loss but has questioned VAR after Fernando Llorente's winner.

Speaking of the decision to award the goal, City boss Guardiola said: "It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it. After 20 minutes we were 3-2 up.

"In the second half we created a lot of chances and we scored the goals we needed.

"Unfortunately, it was a bad end to us so congratulations to Tottenham and good luck for the semi-finals.

"I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente's goal is handball, maybe from the referee's angle it is not."

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
