- Terry believes the coach should have forced him out of the game when he refused to be substituted in the game

Chelsea legend John Terry has expressed displeasure towards Kepa Arrizabalaga after his refusal to be substituted in EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The Citizens coast to victory 4-3 on penalties after both sides played barren draw in over 120 minutes.

Terry said the Blues coach Maurizio Sarri should have forced the goalkeeper out when he refused to come off for Willy Caballero before the penalties.

Though, the 24-year-old stopped Leroy Sane's spot-kick but failed to stop Raheem Sterling from hitting the back of the net.

Once your number goes up you have to come off and show a bit of respect," said Chelsea legend Terry, who was working as a pundit on Sky Sports .

Deal with that after. That’s the last thing the players want. "It leaves Sarri in a tough place - I'm surprised he didn't force him to come off.

"It's a cloud over a really good Chelsea performance especially with what's happened of late, as the results and performances haven't been good enough. It's disappointing - let's see what happens now."

He added: "If I was in there [dressing room] I'd be expecting the manager to come in and deal with it instantly."

Sarri later claimed it was a misunderstanding and said that his goalkeeper would not face any disciplinary action.

"In that situation there was a big misunderstanding caused by the radio," he told Sky Sports .

"I understood there was a problem and we needed a change. I didn't find out until the doctor arrived to the bench after a few minutes.

"It was a big misunderstanding. I understood the goalkeeper had cramp and for me he was unable to go to penalties but the problem was not cramp so he was able to go to penalties."

Legit.ng earlier reported that Chelsea fans have slammed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for his refusal to be substituted in Sunday's EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

It will be recalled that the Spanish shotstopper shunned coming out for Willy Caballero after his manager Maurizio Sarri signaled for him to be removed.

He stopped Leroy Sane's penalty but was unable to keep others from finding the back of the net during penalties.
