After El-Rufai, APC issues stern warning to foreigners allegedly plotting to interfere with 2019 elections
- The ruling party APC has warned foreign observers to only watch and not interfere in the general elections
- APC says it will not accept any attempt by any foreigner to interfere in the electoral process
- The party also said it backed the threat issued by Governor El-Rufai to foreigners aiming to interfere in the elections
Just days after Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai issued a stern warning to foreigners against interfering in Nigeria’s electoral process, his party the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has made a similar move.
The Nation reports that while APC welcomed foreign observers to Nigeria for this year’s elections which starts with the presidential polls on Saturday, February 16, it warned that intimidation or interference under the guise of election monitoring would not be accepted.

The party conveyed its position through a statement by its spokesperson Lanre Issa-Onilu in Abuja on Saturday, February 9.
The party said it was solidly behind the statement credited to Governor El-Rufai and it was ready to defend Nigeria.
Onilu said: “We stand fully by the statement as regards any country that thinks we are a colony; that we have a right to defend every inch of this country; and we are not a banana republic.

“Governor El’Rufai never said people should not come and observe or monitor elections. And he was not referring to people who are genuinely coming to monitor and observe the elections. Nigerians also go to other countries as monitors and observers. So that is acceptable to us. We welcome peer review. What we don’t welcome and what is unacceptable to us is any country thinking we are a colony, we are not. We are a sovereign nation.”
The APC's words come just days after the presidency also backed Governor El-Rufai’s statement threatening foreigners allegedly plotting to intervene in Nigeria’s election, saying it is only in defence of the country’s national interest.
