JUST IN: Senate passes bill for establishment of southeast development commission

- The Senate on Wednesday, December 12, passed the bill for establishment of southeast development commission

- The move by the red chamber was in an effort to tackle infrastructure deficit and ecological setbacks in the region

- The commission, when eventually established, would be the third zonal interventionist body in the country

The Senate has passed the southeast development commission (establishment) bill 2018. The proposed body is expected to deal with the infrastructure deficit and ecological setbacks rife in the region.

Added to this, the said commission, if signed by the presidency, will act as a catalyst for the development of the commercial resources in the southeast, Guardian reports.

The move requires the concurrence of the House of Representatives for onward transmission to the president for assent.

The bill was sponsored by Senators Stella Oduah (PDP-Anambra) and Samuel Anyanwu (PDP-Imo) in June, 2016. Its passage in the Senate came after the presentation of the report of the committee on establishment and public service by its former chairman, Emmanuel Paulker (PDP-Bayelsa).

After consideration and amendment, the bill was eventually passed. Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, held on Wednesday, December 12, commended other lawmakers for their efforts.

“Every morning, we pray that God should give us the grace to do only those things that will promote the peace and unity of this country.

“I believe that we have shown today (yesterday) that we are committed to the unity of this country, and it is this unity that will give us faith in this country,” he said.

Speaking to journalists after the session, members the southeast caucus in the upper chamber of the federal legislature, led by Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia), thanked their colleagues for their patriotism. Abaribe urged the president to sign the bill into law “as soon as we tidy it up and bring to him in the interest of the unity and progress of Nigeria.”

He added: “This will put to rest the long-drawn agitation in the South East and the difficulties in the rehabilitation and reconciliation efforts that started at the end of the civil war. All things we see always will end up at the negotiating table, which is what we have done.”

The southeast development commission, when established, would be the third zonal interventionist body in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that southeast governors zone met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday, November 21.

Issues such as the second Niger bridge, the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu and the non-representation of the region in Nigeria's security apparatus were top items in the agenda of the said meeting.
