Army dismisses reports alleging Boko Haram captured 6 Borno towns

- The Nigerian Army describes a report that Boko Haram terrorists have captured six towns in Borno state as misleading

- The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Sani Usman, says the report does not reflect the reality on the ground right now

The Nigerian Army has faulted a report alleging that Boko Haram terrorists have captured six towns in Borno state.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Sani Usman, described that report as misleading, and is not a true reflection of the reality on the ground right now.

The army's statement is in reaction to emerging reports claiming that Boko Haram insurgents seized Baga, Doron-Baga, Kross Kawwa, Bunduran, Kekeno and Kukawa towns of Borno state.

Daily Trust reported that its impeccable military and political sources made this known in Maiduguri on Sunday, December 30.

It said all the six towns are major population centres in Kukawa local government area of northern Borno. There are currently no Nigerians or multinational forces in the areas.

Meanwhile, the brigade commander of Nigerian Army 7 Brigade, Brigadier General Hassan, has been reportedly removed following the reported capture of Baga town by Boko Haram terrorists.

Daily Trust reports that a new commander would be appointed for the 7 Brigade as part of an offensive by the military to retake the town from the insurgents.

Multiple sources told the newspaper that Baga town where the Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) which also has troops from Chad, Cameroon and Niger, was reportedly taken over by the Abu Mus’ab Albarnawi faction of the Boko Haram on Wednesday, December 27, amid denial by the Nigerian Army that the town was under its control.
