Busia County have been thrown into mourning after Nangina Ward Soccer tournament defending champions Red Sharks FC defender Allan Mbote was struck dead by lightning.
Mbote was celebrating a goal against arch-rivals Raybentos at Luchululo Primary School grounds in Funyula Sub-county on Sunday, December 9.

The two teams had met during the finals of the same tournament in December 2017 with Red Sharks FC hammering their rivals 5-0 in the finals to lift the Cup at Funyula Sports Grounds.
During Sunday’s match, Raybentos stunned the tournament favourites with an early goal to take a slim 1-0 lead at half time in the match that was interfered by intermittent rains.
When the match resumed after the rains had subsided, Red Sharks recovered from an early setback to level the score moments later before the tragedy struck.
Red Sharks went near the corner flag to celebrate the goal and within a split of a second, lightning struck all the seven Sharks players who were celebrating the goal killing Mbote, 20, a Kenyatta University Student, on the spot.

Six of his teammates were rushed to the nearby Nangina Holly Family Mission Hospital.
Three players were treated and discharged while three others are still admitted with serious injuries.
The area Member of the County Assembly John Obwogo called for patience saying the tournament whose finals is scheduled for December 24 will continue, adding that all matches will be moved to Funyula Stadium in a bid to remove element of panic from players.

“Lightning strikes in recent days across the county are a cause for worry. I will push my colleagues in the other 34 wards across the county to set aside funds for installation of lightning arresters in learning institutions in their wards,” he said.
It was understood that the lucrative tournament in 2017 saw Red Sharks awarded a trophy, a set of uniform and KSh 110,000 with runners up Raybentos contented with a trophy, uniforms and KSh 80,000.

The 54-year-old who was a legend as far as Nigerian Professional Football League is concerned was said to have slumped in front of his house in Ikorodu, Lagos on Wednesday, September 26.
Collins Ebitimi became famous in the Nigerian topflight football when he helped Stationery Stores of Lagos to win the Nigerian Premier League title in 1992.
